Surviving to Thrive – Cardboard Box City

Friday, October 18
5 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Berean Community Church

Family Promise Rochester invites the youth of our community to participate in a fundraiser to benefit homeless families in the area. This is an impactful way to help educate your youth about the experience of homelessness.

Cardboard Boxes
Youth are asked to bring cardboard boxes that they can use to build their temporary shelter for the evening. There will be prizes for the most effective and best decorated shelter.

Games, Education, Food, and Live Music
There will also be fun games, educational moments about homelessness and live music! We promise to make the evening fun, interactive and meaningful for everyone. As this is an experience of homelessness, we’ll have a simple soup dinner around 7 p.m. and a snack around 5:30 a.m., Saturday.

Pledges and Prizes
The goal of Card Board Box City is to raise money to “keep families out of the box”. Every participant will raise awareness about this cause and get pledges to support their night “Surviving to Thrive”.

Participants engage in the community to find sponsors who will give them pledged money for every hour they sleep outside. All participants have the opportunity to be entered into a drawing based on their pledged amounts to potentially earn prizes. Please use our pledge form.

Previous participants have said:

  • “I’m a bit nervous, but in a good way. I know I’ll learn a lot tonight!”
  • “This really opened my eyes. It makes a difference when you learn something by DOING it.”
  • “I’ve heard about homelessness on the news. But it didn’t affect me, so I guess I never thought about it. I know I will now. Living this will make it much more memorable.”
  • “I can see this making me think about my community a lot more than I used to.”

Please help us by promoting this event with your youth! If you have any questions, please contact our Family Promise Rochester, Day Center at 507-281-3122.
